BCHL U16 West Kelowna Showcase Wraps Up

The Junior Hockey Showcase League’s Under-16 Division played in their first Showcase weekend at Royal LePage Place in West Kelowna on April 6th to 8th.

In what was a very evenly played weekend, the U16 West Kelowna Warriors earned a win with two ties and a loss in their showcase action. An early 3rd period power play goal from Kaden Urban propelled the Warriors to a 3-2 victory over the U16 Cowichan Valley Capitals before back-to-back ties, the first a 2-2 draw with the U16 Langley Rivermen and then a 3-3 tie against the U16 Victoria Grizzlies. The final game of the weekend for the Warriors saw a 4-0 setback to the U16 Surrey Eagles.

The Eagles had their weekend get off to a tough start with a pair of opening losses before finding their groove as the Showcase went on. Surrey fell by a 5-2 score in their opening matchup against the Grizzlies and couldn’t find the win column in a 5-2 loss to the Capitals but battled their way to a pair of victories to close things out. Justin Wagner turned aside 39 West Kelowna shots for a 4-0 shutout triumph before a late 3rd period Matthew Peterson goal lifted the Eagles to a 2-1 victory over Langley.

Cowichan Valley also had a two-win weekend in the Okanagan and started strong with a 6-3 victory over the Grizzlies, and rather impressively, coming back from a 3-0 1st period deficit with six unanswered goals. The Caps suffered their first defeat of the Showcase to the host Warriors by a 3-2 score before a two-goal game from Caleb Gadd helped Cowichan to a 5-2 victory against the Eagles. The Capitals would wrap up their weekend with a 5-2 loss to the Langley Rivermen.

A weekend similar to West Kelowna, Langley also collected four points and opened their time at Royal LePage Place with a 2-2 tie including a 48-save performance from William Yackie. Another 2-2 tie would follow that up, this time against the Warriors before the Rivermen earned their first win of the weekend by a 5-2 score over the Capitals and were sparked by a hat trick from Adam Grenier before closing out the Showcase with a 2-1 loss to the Eagles.

The Victoria Grizzlies were another one of the three teams to compile two ties on the weekend but got off to a rocky start in the way of a 6-3 loss to the Capitals before a power play goal from Desmond Arthurs with 1:21 remaining to tie the Rivermen 2-2. Ethan Bono scored twice to help the Grizz to a 5-2 win over the Surrey Eagles before closing out their Showcase schedule with two goals from Arthurs in a 3-3 tie against the Warriors.

A jam-packed Showcase weekend will feature both the Under-16 and Under-18 Divisions as the U-16’s head to Shawnigan Lake and the U-18 Division makes their way to Victoria for weekend action on April 13th to 15th.
